Characteristics of S41500 Stainless Steel
2025-02-27

S41500 is a kind of super martensitic stainless steel. It is usually also known as UNS S41500 or AISI 415 stainless steel.

Chemical Composition Features

1. Low Carbon Content: With carbon (C) content ≤ 0.05%, the low carbon level helps maintain good weldability and reduces the risk of defects such as cracking during welding. It also minimizes the potential for carbide precipitation in certain environments.

2. Appropriate Alloying Elements:

• Chromium (Cr): With a content of 11.5% - 14.0%, chromium forms a dense oxide layer on the material’s surface, preventing internal metal from coming into contact with external corrosive media, thus enhancing corrosion resistance.

• Nickel (Ni): Ranging from 3.5% - 5.5%, nickel significantly improves the material’s toughness and enhances its resistance to stress corrosion cracking, making it less prone to cracking under complex stress environments.

• Molybdenum (Mo): Content between 0.5% - 1.0%, which further improves the corrosion resistance of stainless steel, particularly enhancing its resistance to chloride ion corrosion while also increasing hardness.

• Silicon (Si): ≤ 0.60%, helps to improve the alloy’s high-temperature resistance and stabilizes the material’s structure at elevated temperatures.

• Manganese (Mn): Between 0.5% - 1.0%, increases the alloy’s strength and improves the material’s mechanical properties to some extent.

• Phosphorus (P) and Sulfur (S): Phosphorus ≤ 0.03% and sulfur ≤ 0.03%. Strict control of these elements ensures the material maintains good machinability, while sulfur slightly improves the material’s machinability.

Performance Features

• Excellent Corrosion Resistance: S41500 performs exceptionally well in both oxidative and corrosive media, resisting the erosion of saltwater, strong acids, and alkalis. It is suitable for various harsh corrosive environments.

• High Strength: With a tensile strength of ≥ 790 MPa and yield strength of ≥ 620 MPa, it can withstand significant external forces and loads. This makes it suitable for applications that require high strength, such as in mechanical manufacturing and structural components.

• Good Heat Resistance: S41500 maintains structural stability at high temperatures, making it ideal for high-temperature environments. It can be used in the manufacturing of high-temperature equipment and components.

• Excellent Nitriding Resistance: Due to its nitrogen content, S41500 exhibits good nitriding resistance, effectively preventing the formation of nitrides and ensuring stable performance in high-temperature nitriding environments.

• Good Weldability: Due to its low carbon content, S41500 stainless steel is easy to weld. It can be welded using methods such as GTAW, GMAW, and SMAW. Typically, no preheating or post-weld heat treatment is necessary, but intergranular corrosion may occur after welding, which can generally be eliminated through annealing at 650 - 760°C.

• Good Machinability: The material is easy to process and can be cold-rolled, cold-drawn, and cold-bent. It is suitable for producing components of various shapes and sizes, offering high production efficiency and machining quality.

Physical Property Features

• Moderate Density: With a density of about 7.79 g/cm³, it is a common density for stainless steel materials, ensuring the material provides a good balance of mass and strength without being too heavy, making it easier to transport and install across various fields.

• High Melting Point: The melting point ranges from 1390 to 1400°C, ensuring the material maintains stability during high-temperature processing and forming. It can withstand high-temperature environments without premature melting or deformation.

Major Applications

• Chemical Industry: Used for manufacturing reactors, pipelines, valves, heat exchangers, and other equipment, S41500 stainless steel can resist corrosion from various chemicals.

• Food Processing: The food industry requires materials that are hygienic and corrosion-resistant. S41500 stainless steel is ideal for food processing equipment, storage tanks, and containers.

• Marine Equipment: In marine environments, S41500 stainless steel is used for ship equipment, offshore platforms, and hull fittings, resisting saltwater corrosion.

• Energy and Oil & Gas: This steel is commonly used in oil drilling platforms, oil and gas storage, and transmission pipelines.

• Medical Instruments: Used in surgical instruments and certain components of medical devices, S41500 stainless steel effectively utilizes its biocompatibility and corrosion resistance.
