AISI1020 is a low carbon structural steel with low hardenability and low strength ‌. Its chemical composition mainly includes carbon (C), manganese (Mn), phosphorus (P), sulfur (S) and other elements, of which the carbon content is about 0.20%, the manganese content is between 0.30-0.60%, and the phosphorus and sulfur content is low, not more than 0.040% and 0.050% respectively. ‌


Physical and chemical properties

AISI1020 steel has good plasticity and workability, suitable for a variety of cold and hot processing operations, such as cold drawing, stamping, forging and so on. In the state of non-heat treatment, the hardness is less than 156HB, the tensile strength is more than 410MPa, the elongation is more than 25%, and the section shrinkage is more than 5%.

Machining characteristics

AISI1020 steel has excellent workability and is suitable for cold working and welding operations. Its welding performance is good, suitable for arc welding and contact welding, but in gas welding, it is necessary to pay attention to the small thickness, strict shape requirements or complex shape of the workpiece is prone to crack. In addition, during heat treatment such as quenching, the internal properties of AISI1020 steel change relatively little and maintain a certain toughness.

Application field 

‌1. Mechanical manufacturing ‌ : AISI1020 structural steel is often used in the manufacture of mechanical parts with little force but high toughness requirements, such as axles, general engineering parts, mechanical parts, shafts, camshafts, pins, ratchets, light gears, worm gears, spindle, cold head bolts and so on. ‌

2. Automobile manufacturing ‌ : In automobile manufacturing, AISI1020 is used in the manufacture of small and medium-sized carburizing and carbonitriding parts, such as automobile hand brake shoes, fork shaft, drive driven gear and camshaft. ‌

‌3. Construction field ‌ : used for the manufacture of various mechanical parts without stress under hot rolling or normalizing conditions but requiring high toughness, such as forging or pressing large and medium-sized tie rod, shackle, lever, sleeve, clamp and so on. ‌

4. Other fields ‌ : It is used in solar energy, metal products, household appliances, precision electronics, containers, elevators, sanitary ware, rail transit, pressure vessels, architectural decoration, nuclear power, catering kitchenware, chemical equipment, daily electrical appliances, edible machinery, structural pipe and other aspects. ‌
